Example of typical course content:
The classification of occupational health hazards (physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic); the commonly occurring occupational diseases and conditions associated with exposure to physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards; the meaning of the terms: toxic, harmful, corrosive, irritant; and the response to the body to substances with these properties.
The main routes of entry of hazardous substances into the body; the significance of the form taken by a hazardous substance, eg: gas, vapour, mist, aerosol, smoke, fume, dust, liquid and solid; the concept of target organs and target systems; Working exposure limits.
The general principles and methods of air monitoring; the methods that can be used for the prevention and control of exposure to hazardous substances, with particular reference to workplace ventilation systems; the main requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regs; The completion of a COSHH assessment as required by the regulations; precautions necessary during storage, transport, use & disposal of dangerous substances; Introduction to Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging) Regulations.
