Another issue contained within the course is the identification of learning and development needs within the organisation which is always an important issue, as well as contributing towards the development of learning within the organisation and managing the performance of teams and individuals.
A further important sector is that with regard to finance and there are two units specifically aimed at managing the use of financial resources and securing financial resources for your organisation’s plans.
These financial units are about making sure you use financial resources in the most efficient way possible and it covers making recommendations for the use of financial resources and controlling expenditure against budgets. In addition, it includes managing the organisation’s finance at a strategic level. It covers examining the role your organisation generates and allocates financial resources, evaluating proposals from others on expenditure, obtaining the financial resources which your organisation needs. This provides an ideal opportunity to gain experience at work in finance and obtain recognition for the skills achieved.
The course is principally aimed at the bridge between a health and safety professional and a person moving into a senior management role in the organisation where they need to be part of a team and understand the needs of the company, as much as they need to understand and implement compliance with legislation to meet health and safety standards.

General guidance (applies to NVQ 3, 4 and 5)
Individual attention
Each person is dealt with as an individual case as, indeed, each person's situation, experience and previous training will vary. We will provide the guidance and support to identify your strengths and achievement to take advantage of achieved skills and work experience to contribute towards these credible NVQ awards accredited by City & Guilds.
Stage 1
At the initial contact you will have a discussion on the phone with an Examinations Officer which also involves a pre-evaluation process. Following this the counselling takes place and this is made up of a formal evaluation and review. You will then come and see one of our Assessors for about 1 to 2 hours for the final part to be completed. The counselling enables the course learning requirements to be tailored to your individual needs. This takes into account your strengths and weaknesses and looks at all the qualifications and training you have submitted as well as your experience and skills achieved.
This is to ensure that you get the highest quality of developed programme to meet your individual needs which is underpinned and supported by a caring organisation at BCS College where you can phone an Assessor any weekday at any time during opening hours, e mail any time and this is in addition to your formal contact sessions.
We will explain the process to you at this first session and you can rest assured that we will do all we can to ensure you focus on learning and development while we undertake the bureaucracy and submissions etc.
Even the development of the portfolio is easy and user friendly with our unique high quality system whether hard copy (stored securely) or our specially developed secure electronic system (the choice is yours). All our systems meet our very stringent security and confidential requirements which are audited every 3 months for compliance and also meet the government Home Office requirements.
Following meeting the Assessor you will then meet with the Course Administrator who will agree contact dates with your Assessor and inform you of the recommendations of the Course Co-ordinator for the intervals of your sessions.
You will have the option of meeting an Assessor at one of our District Centre’s around the country, the main site in Nottingham or on a phone / correspondence basis. We are also able to offer Assessor meetings at your place of work.
We will provide you with two Assessors to ensure that our quality systems are satisfied but most of all to ensure your smooth continuity of development should one be ill or on holiday. In any event we have a team of Assessors available.
An Examinations Officer will monitor your progress throughout to check you are on the planned target and implement assistance where this is needed.
Comprehensive information will be sent to you after this first session which is tailored to your training needs. This will include an action plan providing the attendance dates etc and identifying the Assessor(s) and Internal Verifier. There may also be a domain knowledge development plan. Little or no training is required for well experienced candidates.
Stage 2
Once you have completed Stage 1 you are on your way to obtaining a highly prestigious award accredited by City & Guilds and with an organisation with an equally excellent reputation which has grown and developed on the basis of so many highly satisfied customers and their recommendations. BCS College works hard to provide a service we can be proud of and to ensure that you have every opportunity to develop and learn.
If you have a problem then we step in and provide help whenever your job has changed, your location has changed, you are moving overseas, you have a need to put the course on hold for a while owing to personal problems, redundancy, illness, pregnancy etc and we have provided solutions to overcome them all in the past. There are no boundaries to learning at BCS College and we have delivered NVQ courses to candidates in far and distant parts of the world including Australia, Africa, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Gibraltar, Libya, Offshore Oil Rigs, to name just a few.
Attendance
A considerable advantage with this process is a significant reduction in the amount of attendance required to achieve the qualification as this is being achieved from the evidence of your experience. Each Assessor meeting is for a period of about 3 hours for a total of four sessions for the NVQ 3 and five for the NVQ 4 and NVQ 5 under normal conditions. These sessions may be about every one or two months or more but the interval is assessed and then agreed with you.
Flexibility
The action plan is agreed mutually with the you and can be varied by agreement so dates can be changed, which is typical for a busy professional in safety and is essential for a course of this kind.. However, we will set up a clear and structured programme so you can see exactly when you start, complete and graduate.
The format has proved to be so successful that numerous large national companies have sent their most senior safety staff on this programme as well as numerous Local Authorities, MOD, Foreign Office, Home Office, many large public companies etc. It is ideal country wide and even overseas. There is also a plan which reduces the need for travel with some assessing contacts being by phone and correspondence.
